トーストマスターズとは、1924年カリフォルニアで生まれた スピーチのトレーニングを主な目的とする国際的な非営利団体です。全世界で16,200以上のクラブがあり、日本では200以上のクラブが活動しています。各国様々な言語のクラブがあり、日本では現在、日本語の他に英語やフランス語のクラブがあります。スピーチや話し方だけではなく、リーダーシップやコミュニケーションのスキルの向上や学びの場を提供しています。

トーストマスターズでは、テクニックを修得するよりも、総合的なコミュニケーション力とリーダーシップのスキルを伸ばすことを目指しています。パブリックスピーキングに関して、もし専門知識やテクニックを習いたいなら、話し方教室など1対1で教えてもらうのが一番でしょう。しかし、様々な人から何度もフィードバックを得ることで、自然と人前で話すことに慣れていきます。また普通の方々から、自分が与えた印象や意見をたくさん聞くことで「自分の話し方が一般にどう見られているのか？」を客観的に見つめ直すことができます。トーストマスターズには、期間ごとのカリキュラムがないので、ご自分のペースで進めることができます。もしやる気と時間さえあれば、毎回すこしでも前に出て話す役割りもできますし、逆に時間のない方は月1回程度の参加でも効果があります。ただし、短期間で確実に上達させる事は困難です。会員による自主運営ため、毎回全員がスピーチできるわけではないからです。例えると、1つのイベントの出演者と運営スタッフを毎回メンバー同士で役割分担しているということ。
