Carnivore

2019-2020

An ongoing duet collaboration with Kate Seethaler, 'Carnivore' explores the imaginative life of the material body through movement and voice. We wonder about dancing the impossible juncture of the real and the unreal. Beginning from images of clothing as 'skin' both of and on the body, we investigate relationships of form to energy, the flesh to the ethereal, and the decorative to the necessary. Our lived gender identities complicate our female dancing bodies as they filter through, land on, and morph into images of monsters, spells, and dead animals. Dreams and memories of pregnancy influence our duet performance as 'one' body; our mining of invisible sensations- the gurgles and swellings of interior volumes. Sound amplifies our textural world, the voice as produced by the material body and shaped by the face is an opportunity for distortion, characterization, an opening for the absurd. Physical limitations create new bodies, lenses for improvisations, parameters for research. Performed at Leah Stein Studios April 2019, Vox Populi April 2019, Cardell Dance Studio February 2020, Cannonball Festival September 2022 (all PA), Engine July 2021 (ME), Upper Jay Arts Center April 2022 (NY)
