Artist statements are a 'behind the scenes' look at an artist's work and encourage the viewer to look deeper at a work of art. Writing artist statements is an incredibly worthy exercise for artists (of all ages) that push them to reflect on their process and analyze their final product. Critique and reflection are integral parts of my TAB classroom.
Below is a small sampling of artist statements and finished works from former students. The work reflects students who are nerotypical and students with different learning or intellectual disabilities.
When I read them I think about how many 'Studio Habits of Mind' emerge so vividly, and how I could have never assigned anything as meaningful to them as their own imaginative concepts. I invite you to do the same.
