As the Sports Editor of The North Report, Edmond North's weekly announcement show hosted by Husky Network, for the past 2 years, I love teaching the newer crew members how to write a sports script. My role includes printing the results from the previous week and the schedule of upcoming events, then highlighting everything that needs coverage. Next, a designated writer puts together the script and sends it back to me for editing. In this process, I share praise over sections that look great and constructive criticism to help the writer improve their skills for future scripts.
Figure A is an original script I received and Figure B shows how I helped improve it before filming. Figure C is the published version of the sports segment.
Our crew shares a website with Edmond North's newspaper, the Pawprint. While the Pawprint staff primarily uses this site for publications, we have all of our journalism staff bios linked there. The Husky Network staff is excited about the diversity of backgrounds and previous experiences that everyone brings to the team. These differences bring a variety of new and unique ideas to the creative table, provide fresh perspectives for our stories, and help us connect with the diverse members of our audience.
While serving as Sports Editor as well as Post-Production Supervisor in the Broadcast Journalism class, being a good leader and classmate is much more important to me than the titles in the bylines. I strive to be someone any of my peers can come to for advice, help, or just to chat. I love being involved in this program, because I am able to create unique relationships with this crew where we help each other grow as journalists. Through helping new team members, I always end up learning new things myself, like different shortcuts in a software, ways to outline a story, or about my classmates’ interests and opinions.
