In addition to celebrating diversity on the Husky Network staff, our team is intentional about representing diversity though our feature stories. My instructor, Mr. Campbell, encourages us to cover stories that are often overlooked, which led me to develop a passion for highlighting underrepresented sports and women’s athletics. I’ve learned that the students who don’t always attract attention—those who seem quiet or are in less-publicized activities—often have the most interesting stories to tell. As a journalist, I believe it’s important to seek out these voices and share their stories with our student body, ensuring that everyone has a chance to be seen and heard.
Our crew naturally represents different backgrounds and perspectives, which strengthens our storytelling and ensures that a variety of voices are heard. Here, my crew mate Keely Crawford and I anchor a news segment of the North Report. (Start: 0:39/End: 0:54 | Start: 4:24/End: 4:50)
This feature was created for an 'On-Deadline' competition, completed within a two-week time frame from prompt to publication. I managed every aspect independently, including planning, interviews, filming, b-roll, editing, and final production. Fencing is a rare sport in Oklahoma, and this story highlights one of the state's top female athletes, who excels not only in the classroom but also as a leader among her peers.
I created this feature last school year about a close friend whose talent is undeniably among the best in the Class of 2025. Female wrestling is highly underrepresented in the U.S. and worldwide, so I wanted to highlight her achievements. After placing third in the 2023 World Team Trials, she returned stronger in 2024, winning first and earning a spot on the USA National Team. This feature story earned 7th in Broadcast Feature Story for NSPA's Best of Show at the Spring 2024 National High School Journalism Convention.
