For this brief, the Graphic Design course collaborated with the MA Creative writing students- we chose from a selection of stories from them which we then had to turn into a typography based publication. The rules were that we were only allowed to use typography in order to reflect the storyline- no illustration or photography.
The story I chose was 'How I started Operation Touch N' No Go by Booi Carlyn, which is about a woman that gets trapped in a car park for 20 months and deliberates how she got herself into this situation. One of the story's main themes is mental health which I chose to base my typographical choices around- I did this by selecting words and quotes that illustrate the character's mental state, and emphasised them by using word morphs and creating shapes with the text. I decided to print this using an accordion fold in order to reflect the feeling of endlessness that's also featured in the story. The design of the front cover reflects a key card which is a key item in the storyline.
We then had to create a digital element that accompanied the text- I chose to create an animation using a page from the story and distorting the text around the word 'scream'. This was available to scan via a QR code which was printed on the inside cover of the publication. I did this using AfterEffects.
Unfortunately I ran into an issue when I sent the publication to print, and due to this I haven't managed to complete it to a standard that I'm satisfied with, and therefore haven't photographed it professionally yet. I do aim to complete this project before the end of term.
