Module 2. Languages

All the tasks will be conducted in Zoom with the teacher during the classes. Here is the link: ....

However, if you miss the class, you are supposed to do them by yourself and send to the teacher.

Class 1

Tasks

1) Complete the table with the words and expressions (you can find them on your worksheet) which can be used to describe graphs and charts. You should write the word/expression in the right column according to its meaning.

Digital brainstorming:

Imagine that you are doing a project on the world’s most studied languages. You have found some data on the subject (you can see the table on the screen). Also, here you can see the plan of your work and some key elements. We will discuss each part of the plan in turn. You will be given 5-7 minutes per each part. We will start with the first one. (Working with a partner), you should write a paragraph (just a few sentences) for this or that part and submit them to me. After each part we will discuss ideas everyone has and try to derive the final version together. Don’t forget to use the vocabulary of the lesson and the vocabulary from the previous class (for the description of graphs and charts).

Use the following plan:

– make an opening statement on the subject of the project;

– select and report 2–3 facts;

– make 1–2 comparisons where relevant;

– outline a problem that can arise with the other languages losing their popularity, and suggest a way of solving it;

– conclude by giving your opinion on the importance/irrelevance of linguistic diversity.

Tools and materials:

Class 2

At home you were supposed to choose a graph/chart/table connected with languages or education (or create the graph by yourselves) and then (if approved) prepare oral presentations describing the information from the graph.

Now you will present the descriptions of the graphs and charts which you have prepared at home. I will open the application (YequalX.com) and give you the access. One person of the pair (or you may take turns) should read the description of the graph and the other person should draw the graph in the application according to the description. Others can open this program on their phones and try to draw the graph by themselves. After that we will discuss and compare the results everyone has.
