When writing a news story, objectivity is paramount, which means that opinions have no place in a news story, unless it is an editorial. Can you distinguish between opinions and facts? Here are some characteristics of facts and opinions:
Facts:
can be proven
real for all people and places
can be checked or measured
can be observed (seen)
are historical
are 100 % true
Opinions refer to anything that cannot be proven and represent a particular person’s (or group’s) perspective:
feelings
thoughts
judgments
beliefs
estimations
