Actress/Director Lynda Gravatt Oral History Interview
In May 2022 the incomparable actress, director and storyteller Lynda Gravatt granted me an oral history interview in support of my research focused on the history of Howard Players theatrical production. We chatted for just over 80 minutes.
She was a very proud Howard Player! She was generous, kind, funny, thoughtful and most of all she was supportive of my research.
Here's a snippet of the interview where she shares how she got to Howard, what her first major was and how Owen Dodson changed the course of her career and future. Thank you Miss Gravatt for your fierce love of theatre and young people! #RIH #FineFineFineArts

Greg Poole president of the Howard Players 1978/79, class of 1979 - Oral History Interview by Denise J. Hart (July 20, 2016)
How did the Howard Players function during the late 70's?
The Howard Players was a separate producing entity during his time at Howard. Student driven material was very popular.
How did the Saturday Night Live put the Howard Players in the hot seat?
A student project was produced "A Saturday Night Live" compilation of sketches, spoofs on game shows and some bawdiness and spoofs of the faculty. it was held in Ira Aldridge Theatre. It was standing room only. Raised a good bit of money. The administration was not in rehearsals and the Howard Players did not have a faculty advisor.
A couple of things happened. The were a little at odds with the administration because the faculty were putting themselves in shows and doing a lot of shows they wrote. The Howard Players produced the comedy sketch with no faculty oversight.
Midwary through the show the faculty decided to stop the show and censor the material. They did 3 things: 1) confiscated the money 2) cut off the lights 3) the students associated with the show got black balled.
A meeting was held with the students and faculty to discuss the issues in the department. There was a lot of pushback to stop the department from producing white plays.
