" The more material there is, the more need there is for filters. You don't need a printing press anymore, but you do need people who know how to cultivate sources, double-check information and put the brand of legitimacy on it."
-Howard Rheingold
❀ Double Checking? Triple Checking? ❀
Double checking is essential in all tasks, and it involves reviewing work for errors and mistakes. Double checking might be time-consuming, but it is a valuable step that can prevent costly mistakes and possible stress afterwards.
I really learned the importance of double-checking through this one problem in our Module Assessment 3, and I can assure you that it really gave me so much relief when I found out that my double-checked answer is indeed the correct one. ✦
phase out carelessness !!
This is problem number two in our MA 3, as you can see on the photo, I had erasures because I changed my answer. Well, what exactly did I do and how did it affect my score?
Solving for the first part was really not that hard, but the second part with the table was really confusing for me. Initially, I had -13 as my answer for the x-intercept of the function. However, when I solved for the y-intercept of its inverse function, I got 5/6. The values did not match.
So I thought to myself, "hmm, something is really wrong" because I knew for sure that the x-intercept of a function is the y-intercept of its inverse.
Even though I was shaking and nervous because time was running so fast, I tried my best to be calm and re-checked my solution. I then tried solving again, then I was right, I made a mistake and my solution that got me -13 was wrong. I felt relieved. I erased my previous answer and input the correct answer. To be honest, I still wasn't sure if x= 5/6 was 100% correct, but since time was my enemy, I trusted my gut and still input it as my final answers. I didn't even looked at the key to correction Sir Batas showed after we passed our papers, or listen to my classmates' post traumatic discussions. I just prayed hard to God that my answer is correct, since that was my final chance to make sure I get Superb for my Module Assessment Component.
Then the time for posting the scores came. I got 19 !!!! I was so happy ♡ I was aiming for at least 17 for my dream S (actually dream E) but God blessed me with so much more. I was so grateful. Then I realized, what if I didn't take time to double check my answer? what if I was careless? I would not probably get the 19 but I'm thankful I did what I did. ✿
As a future medical doctor, I can say that there really is no room for carelessness when time comes that I would perform my duty. Most especially when we are talking about the lives of my patients. That is why that I am really thankful that as early as now, I get to exercise these kinds of attitudes and skills.
✦ Double Checking in the Real World ✦
Media is an important pillar of democracy and plays a crucial role in keeping people informed about what is happening in the world. However, in recent times, there has been a surge in attacks on media personnel and establishments.
These attacks take many forms, including physical violence, intimidation, censorship, and legal harassment. Journalists who report on sensitive topics such as corruption, human rights abuses, and political scandals are particularly vulnerable to such attacks.
The consequences of these attacks are far-reaching. They not only put the lives and safety of journalists at risk but also undermine people's trust in the media. When the media is unable to report freely and accurately, it becomes difficult for the public to make informed decisions.
This just shows how we must be equipped on how to properly verify information, especially those freely shared on social media platforms.
I believe having the ability of being critical thinkers and master double, or even triple checkers is one step in helping solve our social issue of attacks on media.
Spreading Media and Information Literacy, in particular, is one great way to share awareness to people about this social issue, and is an effective wake up call to push people into spreading awareness as well to others, and properly verifying all information they ever come across to. It also teaches us the importance of being careful, especially in instances where we want to share information we also just found from another source.
Realistically, as high-school students, I believe that these are actually great ways already to help solve the issue of attacks on media.
