Milestone 2: Define
Clarify the user’s challenge and outline the specific design problem, including criteria and constraints for success.
Key Deliverables:
Design Criteria and Constraints list
Problem Statement
Labeled unit circle diagram with user motion mapped (degrees/radians)
Success Metrics/Test Conditions
How do clearly defined criteria and constraints shape the mathematical approach we take to solve our users' problems?
Learning Intentions:
Produce a precise problem statement, a criteria and constraints list, a labeled unit circle showing the user's motion arc, and three measurable test conditions.
Today's Concept:
You cannot solve a math problem you haven't defined. This is the moment where the empathy work from Lessons 2–6 becomes an engineering document.
Criteria describe what success looks like: the robot tip must land within 1 cm of the target. Constraints are the fixed facts you must work within: the arm is 15 cm long; the motor only rotates from 0° to 180°. Both shape every calculation you'll do from here on. Get them wrong now and you'll be solving the wrong problem for the next ten lessons.
