Great question! Mental health is something all of us experiences. Mental health is not defined as one emotion or experience, rather it varies for every individual. Mental health can be happy and thriving or it could be anger and self injury and everything in between on a continuum. Our mental health is influenced by both things we can control such as how we are taking care of ourselves as well as things we can't control such as genetics or how we were raised. Regardless of the influences that are resulting in various ways we are feeling, you can find ways to help your mental health just as you do with physical health.
Everyone feels all the feelings sometimes associated with negative mental health such as being sad, angry, irritated, not socializing as much as normal. This is normal and healthy! But there is a difference between being sad and having depression or being anxious and having an anxiety disorder. How do we know if what we are feeling is normal and healthy or if we need help? Mental health conditions are identified by how long and how intense the feelings are impacting one's life.
Mental health professionals are available not only when you feel things have become really bad or for diagnosed medical conditions but the reality is they can help anyone come up with a plan for when stress, tough situations, or relationships become difficult. So whether it is general symptoms or a diagnosed medical condition, a mental health professional can help guide you to how to cope.
