Pain and Emotion Neuroscience Laboratory (PENLab) works towards understanding how the human brain builds up the experience of bodily pain and different experiences associated with emotional suffering in health and disease across the lifespan. Pain and Emotion Neuroscience Laboratory (PENLab), aims at identifying brain-mind-body mechanisms underlying pain and affective symptoms in juvenile and adult patients.

Our research focuses on understanding the brain mechanisms and psychosocial and physical processes that underlie somatic complaints and affective suffering and recovery in chronic pain, depression, and anxiety. Our research is mostly focused on the analysis and interpretation of functional brain imaging data, subjective measures of pain, emotion and thought content and psychophysiological and behavioral measures. Currently we are working on identifying brain-behavioral signatures of chronic pain, depression, and anxiety in youth and adults and in detecting overlapping and non-overlapping brain-behavior signatures across disorders of chronic pain and depression. We are also working on understanding the effects of social support, mindfulness meditation and altruistic behavior on regulating pain and affective experiences.
