The goal of the thesis statement instruction for my students in Writing 1310 is to understand the purpose of thesis statements, identify strong thesis statements, and craft their own thesis statements. They will ultimately use these thesis statements in an argumentative essay. This instruction will be conducted in an online learning environment, so the instruction should be accessible for a variety of types of learners.

Objective 1: After reading the textbook and attending the lecture, students will understand that a thesis is argumentative. This should be 100% accomplished.

Objective 2: After attending lecture and practicing in groups, students will remember the “rules” regarding argumentative thesis statements. This should be 100% accomplished.

Objective 3: Given examples of thesis statements and a discussion board, students will evaluate the strength of thesis statements. Students should evaluate with 80% accuracy.

Objective 4: Given an essay assignment, students will produce their own argumentative thesis statements. Students should earn 70% or higher on the assignment.
