Social Background

The learners in this instance are all UCA freshman taking Writing 1310. They are almost all 18-19 years old, and they are almost all from Arkansas.

Experiential Background

The learners have almost all written argumentative essays before, and they are familiar with the concepts that will be taught in this lesson.

The learners have been using Blackboard, discussion forums, and Zoom all semester, and they are all adept at these technologies.

Developmental Level

The difference between high school and college writing expectations usually present a challenge for these learners.

Motivation

Fortunately, they are generally enthusiastic about Zoom discussions and peer review discussion boards.

Knowledge Level

The learners are all first-year college students who have a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Learning Style

The learners have predominantly self-identified as visual learners: 75.5%. 61.2% identify as kinesthetic learners, and 20.4% identify as auditory learners. The learners could choose more than one of these options.
