53rd Marcigny Film Meeting, Marcynéma
All Saints' Day holidays
October 25 to 29, 2024
Vox Cinema, 71110 Marcigny, Burgundy, Saône-et-Loire, France
Report on the 53rd meeting
For over fifty years, the Marcynéma association has successfully achieved the challenge of annually presenting heritage films representative of French and international independent artistic creation. Over the space of five days, the films follow one another based on varied subjects & themes. We do our best to offer variety in worldwide origins, time periods and types of cinematic production.
It's possible to see just a few films or the whole programme. The most important thing for us is to give people the chance to get to know the various cinematic styles & films through viewing and discussion with film professionals and spectators.
This year, short films are back in the programme with :
Rupture by Pierre Etaix - France - 1961 - 11 mins. With Claude Melki. Friday 25 at 2pm.
Pourvu qu'on ait l'ivresse... by Jean-Daniel Pollet - France - 1958 - 20 mins. With Claude Melki. Friday 25 at 4.30pm.
L'Avatar botanique de Mademoiselle Flora by Jeanne Barbillon - France - 1965 - 14 mins. With Bernadette Lafont. Monday 28 at 9.30pm.
Les Mistons by François Truffaut - France - 1957 - 17 mins. With Bernadette Lafont. Monday 28 at 2.30pm.
At the start of each film we will be showing you examples of our favorite Heritage trailers and ads from the 70s and 80s. We love them!
Presentation
Marcynéma Association
The Marcynéma association runs viewing sessions reserved for members and has organized for over 53 years an annual film event, the "Rencontre Cinéma de Marcigny" (Marcigny Film Meeting).
Marcynéma meetings
Since the foundation in 1971 of the “Rencontre” , we have successfully brought together enthusiasts and moviegoers, high school students and students, the general public and professionals of the 7th art, with the opportunity of discovering excellent world classic films and rare films from a large library of restored Heritage film copies.
Marcigny Heritage films Meeting is the oldest of its type situated in a rural setting; it was directed by Paul Jeunet until 2018. Paul was an initiator and artistic director in audiovisual art for our annual meetings, he was also the cousin of Jean-Pierre Jeunet who was one of the directors of the association from the outset.
Since the beginning of the Heritage films Meetings in Marcigny journalists, critics, film distributors, directors, film heritage curators... have each year contributed to the success of the event.
The films are presented in the Vox Cinema in Marcigny, which was originally an Ursuline convent Chapel of the Charolais-Brionnais region. In parallel to the film meeting the Marcynéma exhibits bills/posters in various historic monuments around the town, in shops, restaurants and museums. An exhibition of contemporary photographs, film archives, a theatrical show, a concert or a cinema concert, debates... often accompanies the event.
We can dream about the future of Heritage, because it’s already our Present (1).
Marcynéma invites you to experience this our Present during the “Rencontre”. A journey across French and foreign filmographies: Belgium, United Kingdom, Iran, Mexico, United States...
A foray into different genres: drama, comedy, thriller, detective, romance, fantasy, western...
A journey through four decades: the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Revisit films that have left their mark on the history of cinema, in original versions and restored prints.
Rediscover our favorite Heritage 35mm trailers and advertisements. All this while enjoying large screen projection conditions.
For us, it's always a pleasure to enhance experience or/and relive some great cinema moments.

He has a Doctorate in film and audiovisual studies from the Université Paris 3- Sorbonne Nouvelle, and teaches and researches film history and aesthetics. His favourite subjects include French silent cinema, French cinema in the 1960s, the relationship between cinema and history, film conservation and restoration, and cinema in Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence. He has written or edited books on Louis Feuillade, Léonce Perret, Jacques de Baroncelli, Agnès Varda, Brigitte Bardot, Bernadette Lafont (Bernadette Lafont, une vie de cinéma) and co-authored a Dictionnaire du cinéma dans le Gard (Presses du Languedoc, 1999). THE ‘LA CHIPS’ BRASS BAND : LA Chips, a four-musician brass band, is a quirky, mischievous acoustic brass band with no technical limits or barriers that appeal to all generations. With their good humour, energy and finesse, they adapt music from Africa, the Balkans and India. Their dynamic, multicultural repertoire includes Calypso and charming Italian melodies, energetic New Orleans funk and tunes from the Balkans and North Africa.
Programming
The films are projected in DCP or 35mm original version with French subtitles.
We suggest you take your time. Five days and five film themes that you can choose from, according to your inclinations and curiosity. A quiet stay in Marcigny during which you can suspend the mad rush of everyday work and town life to devote yourself fully to the cinema. At a time when films have become a consumer product so easily and quickly forgotten, we believe it is essential to preserve the memory of the 7th art, in one way by questioning what makes certain works beautiful and rare. This year, we have gone beyond the mere screening of films by accompanying each film and it’s specificity by a specialist and by providing time for discussion and debate, which makes our event so convivial.
Program - Lists of movies
FRIDAY 25th OCTOBER: A JOURNEY ACROSS COMEDIES WHERE DIRECTORS PLAY WITH THE CAMERA TO CREATE A NEW LANGUAGE OF COMEDY
In these three films from different eras, directors play with words and the camera to create a new language of comedy.
2:00 p.m. Le Roman d'un tricheur / Confessions of a Cheat (1936) by and starring Sacha Guitry. A young man discovers his talent for cheating. For Gilbert Salachas of Télérama, ‘Guitry's best film, at his funniest, lightest, most insolent and unusual’.
4:45 p.m. Bluebeard's Eighth Wife (1938) by Ernst Lubitsch. The affair between an American billionaire and a ruined aristocrat. The first film of the ‘Wilder Touch’, defined by J. L. Bourget as an art form in which ‘desire for wealth and sexual desire are in everyone's mind but are only shown on screen in an allusive or metaphorical way’.
8:45 p.m. L'Homme de Rio / That Man from Rio (1964) by Philippe de Broca. The adventures of a soldier on leave trying to rescue his kidnapped fiancée. A film of action and suspense starring Jean-Paul Belmondo and Françoise Dorléac.

2:00 p.m. Charisma (1999) by Kiyoshi Kurosawa. After an abject failure in a hostage situation, the policeman (Gora Yabuike) takes refuge in a forest where he discovers a mysterious tree called “Charisma”. A captivating and fascinating film that combines the themes of fear of immigration, greed, relationships with the environment and human redemption...
4:30 p.m. Spirited Away / 千と千尋の神隠し, Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001) by Hayao Miyazaki. Young Chihiro finds herself plunged into the world of spirits. A journey through Japanese folklore, it won an Oscar for best animated film in 2003.
8:45 p.m. Princess Mononoke / もののけ姫, Mononoke-hime (1997) by Hayao Miyazaki. A young archer is drawn unwillingly into a war pitting Princess Mononoké and the fantasy forest in which she was raised against Lady Eboshi and her village of forges. This epic fresco tackles a wide range of themes: the protection of nature, the ravages of war, the status of women...
SUNDAY 27th OCTOBER: A LOOK AT THE CINEMA OF DIRECTOR
JULIE BERTUCCELLI IN HER PRESENCE
Julie Bertuccelli, who worked as an assistant director with Otar Iosseliani, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Rithy Panh and Bertrand Tavernier before directing documentaries for television, will be the guest of honour at the 53rd Rencontre Cinéma de Marcigny. 4:30 p.m. Since Otar Left (2003, César for Best First Film 2004). The Georgian Otar has gone to work in Paris. One day his family receives no news. A bittersweet comedy, a poignant film in which what is said and what is not said create a delicate and subtle framework.
8:45 p.m. The Tree (2010, closing film at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, won seven Australian Oscar nominations). When Peter disappears, everyone reacts in their own way and a majestic fig tree becomes a character in its own right. Charlotte Gainsbourg plays the role of a woman whose life is turned upside down in the immense setting of the Australian Bush.
MONDAY 28th OCTOBER: BERNARD BASTIDE, FILM HISTORIAN AND FELLOW TRAVELLER OF ACTRESS BERNADETTE LAFONT, RETRACES HER CAREER

His talk will be illustrated by four films.
9:30 a.m. L'Amour c'est gai, l'amour c'est triste (1971) by Jean-Daniel Pollet. Brother and sister Léon and Marie share a modest flat at the end of a cul-de-sac in Faubourg Saint-Antoine. Bernadette Lafont, the whimsical sister of the fabulous Claude Melki, rubs shoulders with the phrase-making Jean-Pierre Marielle and an unrecognizable Chantal Goya.
2:00 p.m. Les Bonnes femmes (1960) by Claude Chabrol. Four salesgirls are bored in a small electrical goods shop. When their work is done, they seek escape... Chabrol says that as always he shows ‘the interesting points and the weak points of an era’ and leaves it up to the viewer to make his or her own judgement. PROHIBITED -16 YEARS
4:30 p.m. Les Stances à Sophie (1971) by Moshé Mizrahi. A free, modern woman falls in love with a wealthy, rather conformist businessman. 8:45 p.m. Le Voleur / The Thief of Paris (1967) by Louis Malle. The long career of a thief played by Jean-Paul Belmondo and, in a more modest role, Bernadette Lafont. Le Voleur is first and foremost the work of an anarchist writer who describes one man's revolt against the established order.
TUESDAY 29th OCTOBER: SPOTLIGHTING A DAY OF DISCOVERY OF UNIQUE FILMS FROM A WIDE RANGE OF BACKGROUNDS.
The four films selected are full of surprises, innovation and emotion.

4:30 p.m. Meek’s Cutoff (2010) by Kelly Reichardt. A caravan of three families hires trapper Stephen Meek to guide them through the Cascade Mountains.... A successful retelling of a page in the history of the American West minimalistic, without using the codes of the genre.
8:45 p.m. Belladonna of Sadness / 哀しみのベラドンナ Kanashimi no Beradonna (1973) by Japanese director Eiichi Yamamoto. A young peasant girl refuses the lord of the village...with terrible consequences. An original graphic adventure borrowing from Art Nouveau. PROHIBITED -12 YEARS

The collection highlights the physical metamorphoses of an actress who, from the late 1950s onwards, following in the footsteps of Bardot, overturned the conventions inherited from the theatre to invent a modern, spontaneous and popular style of acting.
