We have tried to embrace the core values during the FLL Submerged season. Specific examples are listed below.
Discovery
We learned so many new things this season and had a blast sharing them with others! One of the best parts was hosting a Lego robotics workshop at the Milton Library, where we got to teach kids about robots and inspire them to try it too. We also spent time researching problems in the ocean for our Water Warden project. We learned about the different ocean zones and why trash is such a big problem. Every time we tried something new, we discovered cool ideas and ways to make a difference.
Innovation
Innovation was a huge part of what we did this season. For our Water Warden project, we designed a solar-powered buoy that uses cameras and sensors to find trash in the ocean. We built and tested a bunch of versions, adding cool things like GPS, a gyroscope, and environmental sensors. For our robot, we created a jig to make the submersible mission easier and redesigned the arms so they were faster to swap out. Every time we had an idea, we tested it, fixed it, and made it better. That’s what innovation is all about!
Impact
We wanted to make a big impact this season, not just on our team but on others too. For our Water Warden, we focused on helping researchers find trash faster so it doesn’t spread in the ocean. We also helped other teams by sharing our submersible jig design and learning from them through surveys. It felt really awesome to know that our work could help others and make a difference in the environment.
Inclusion
Everyone on our team got to be part of the action this season! We made sure everyone’s ideas were heard, whether it was for the robot or our Water Warden project. Each team member had a job, like researching, building, coding, or designing. For the Water Warden, we split tasks so we could all contribute, like designing the buoy, programming the sensors, and testing it. By working together and including everyone, we made something we’re really proud of.
Teamwork
Teamwork was super important to everything we did. We worked in pairs or small groups to build, code, and test our robot and worked together as a whole team on the Water Warden project. Whenever something didn’t work, we came together to figure it out and fix it. We all had different strengths, and by teaming up, we were able to do so much more than we could on our own.
Fun
We made sure to have fun while working hard! After practices, we played video games together to celebrate, and our coach made the best burgers for us. Even while working on our robot or the Water Warden, we joked around and made it fun. Robotics is a lot of work, but when you’re having fun with your team, it makes everything better!
Gracious Professionalism
We tried our best to be respectful and helpful to others this season. We shared our jig design with other teams to help them with their missions and took surveys to learn from their ideas. For our Water Warden project, we got feedback from ocean experts like Mr. Giuseppe Suaria and Mr. Alan Papalia, which helped us improve our design. We worked hard, but we also made sure to lift others up and show that you can compete while being kind and helpful.
We are a team that is driven by Discovery and Innovation and aim for meaningful Impact. Inclusion is key—we value Teamwork and diverse perspectives. And above all, we make sure to have Fun along the way!"
This season, our team had an amazing journey full of learning, creativity, and teamwork. We worked together to build and program our robot, MARC III 24.1, and came up with innovative solutions for both our robot and our project. For our innovation project, we created the Water Warden, a solar-powered buoy designed to detect ocean trash and help researchers. Along the way, we embraced the FLL Core Values, from discovering new ideas to including everyone on the team, while having tons of fun. Whether it was hosting workshops, sharing ideas with other teams, or celebrating with video games, this season has been an unforgettable experience!
It's 11:08 PM the night before the tournament. The coaches are exhausted, the parents are ready to crash, and even the robot seems to want a break 🙂. But the MARC boys are still full of energy, laughs, and unstoppable fun—classic MARC boys being MARC boys!
