Era mi trigésimo año camino del cielo;
despertó a mi oído desde el puerto y el vecino bosque
y la playa encharcada de mejillones
y ensacerdotada de garzas
el saludo mañanero
con oraciones de agua y gritos de grajos y gaviotas
y chocar de barcas de vela en la pared enmenbranada de
redes invitando a levantarme
al momento
en la aún dormida ciudad y a partir.
Mi cumpleaños empezó con aves marinas
y los pájaros de los alados árboles volaban mi nombre
sobre las heredades y los caballos blancos
y yo me levanté
en el lluvioso otoño
y salí a vagar en medio del chubasco de mis días.
La marea alta y la garza buceaban al coger yo el camino
y pasar los confines
y las puertas
de la ciudad se cerraban cuando ésta despertaba.
Una primaverada de alondras en una flotante nube
y los matorrales del camino derramando silbidos
de mirlos y un sol de octubre
estival
al hombro de la colina,
aquí climas amantes y dulces cantores súbitamente
entraron la mañana en que yo salí a errar y a escuchar
el viento que escurría la lluvia
soplar frío
en el bosque lejano a mis pies.
Lluvia pálida sobre el puerto que se desvanecía
y sobre la iglesia tamaño caracol mojada por el mar
sus cuernos en la niebla y el castillo
pardo como una lechuza
pero todos los jardines
de primavera y verano florecían en los cuentos fantásticos
allende los confines y bajo la densa nube de alondras.
Allí pude vivir maravillado
mi día de cumpleaños
más el tiempo cambió en redondo.
Volvióse del país de la dicha
y a través del otro aire y el alterado azul del cielo
precipitóse de nuevo una maravilla de verano
con manzanas,
peras y grosellas rojas,
y vi claramente en el cambio las
olvidadas mañanas de un niño caminando con su madre
por entre las parábolas
de la luz del sol
y las leyendas de las capillas verdes
y los dos veces narrados campos de la infancia
que sus lágrimas quemaban mis mejillas y su corazón
palpita en el mío.
Estos eran los bosques, el río y el mar
donde un muchacho
en el atento
verano de los muertos susurraba la verdad de su dicha
a los árboles y a las piedras y al pez de la marea.
Y el misterio
cantaba vivo
todavía en el agua y en los pájaros cantores.
Y allí pude vivir maravillado mi día de cumpleaños
mas el tiempo cambió en redondo. Y la pura
dicha del muchacho muerto tiempo atrás cantó ardiente
al sol.
Era mi trigésimo
año camino del cielo en pleno mediodía de verano
aunque la ciudad a mis pies yaciera deshojada en la sangre
de octubre.
Ojalá pueda cantar todavía
la verdad de mi corazón
en esta alta colina a la vuelta de un año.
Poem in October
It was my thirtieth year to heaven
Woke to my hearing from harbour and neighbour wood
And the mussel pooled and the heron
Priested shore
The morning beckon
With water praying and call of seagull and rook
And the knock of sailing boats on the net webbed wall
Myself to set foot
That second
In the still sleeping town and set forth.
My birthday began with the water-
Birds and the birds of the winged trees flying my name
Above the farms and the white horses
And I rose
In rainy autumn
And walked abroad in a shower of all my days.
High tide and the heron dived when I took the road
Over the border
And the gates
Of the town closed as the town awoke.
A springful of larks in a rolling
Cloud and the roadside bushes brimming with whistling
Blackbirds and the sun of October
Summery
On the hill’s shoulder,
Here were fond climates and sweet singers suddenly
Come in the morning where I wandered and listened
To the rain wringing
Wind blow cold
In the wood faraway under me.
Pale rain over the dwindling harbour
And over the sea wet church the size of a snail
With its horns through mist and the castle
Brown as owls
But all the gardens
Of spring and summer were blooming in the tall tales
Beyond the border and under the lark full cloud.
There could I marvel
My birthday
Away but the weather turned around.
It turned away from the blithe country
And down the other air and the blue altered sky
Streamed again a wonder of summer
With apples
Pears and red currants
And I saw in the turning clearly a child's
Forgotten mornings when he walked with his mother
Through the parables
Of sunlight
And the legends of the green chapels
And the twice told fields of infancy
That his tears burned my cheeks and his heart moved in
mine.
These were the woods the river and sea
Where a boy
In the listening
Summertime of the dead whispered the truth of his joy
To the trees and the stones and the fish in the tide.
And the mystery
Sang alive
Still in the water and singingbirds.
And there could I marvel my birthday
Away but the weather turned around. And the true
Joy of the long dead child sang burning
In the sun.
It was my thirtieth
Year to heaven stood there then in the summer noon
Though the town below lay leaves with October blood.
O may my heart's truth
Still be sung
On this high hill in a year's turning.
