This is a wonderful website and toolkit to help you process your learning space. The have created the mnemic tool of
AEIOU
As stated on the website,:
AEIOU is a coding structure mnemonic used to organize data under the following sections: Activities, Environments, Interactions, Objects and Users. The framework can be applied as-is or customized and adapted into a new taxonomy. In both cases, the goal of using this framework is to make interpreting and analyzing data easier, while visually mapping the significant relationships and interactions between categories.
When people enter your space pay attention to what they are doing. Are they going straight to the computers? Are they heading to main tables? Seeking the corners? The Makerspace?
Pay attention to how they move, shift furniture to their needs, how the get comfortable, etc.
Explore how people use spaces outside of your space. How do people engage at other libraries(public and other schools), museums, amusement parks, stores, etc. Once again watch how they interact and make note of what you want to achieve in your own space and what is needed to make that happen naturally.
We are heading back to your space. How do the people who enter your space interact with one another? Does the space enhance or limit those interactions?
What about interactions with materials? Easy to access or limited by setup?
What about comfort? Noise levels?
Observe interactions in all forms and pay attention to what is missing and is the space part of the problem or solution?
What are people using in your space? Build a baseline of what is being used in your environment and how they are used. Yes, this includes paper and pencil, computers, books, etc. Watch how they mix materials to achieve their goal as well.
Who are the people in the space? Talk to them. Hold conversations. Get to know them and what they want to get out of the space.
The website has some templates created for you to take note of these items
