Proposals - Public Realm & Infrastructure
Signage & Wayfinding
The wayfinding strategy illustrated below proposes a number of measures which will both inform and add a degree of consistency across the types of signage which has been used to date. We propose a consistent suite of signs across the town as well as those which will define the circular walking and cycle routes.
Ideas and Opportunities
Using a combination of street furniture, signs and art
Totums with history and interpretation
A wayfinding suite and narrative across the whole town
Ability to link with QR codes and future information points
Combining seasonal events with permanent installations
Use of ‘Toolkit’ elements from Community Space proposals
Local history information boards
Examples of totem signage and wayfinding

Signage & Wayfinding: North of Tamar Bridge
Boardwalk & Illuminated Royal Albert Bridge
Together with the plans for improved connectivity both within Saltash and on the River, the team have a number of ideas which might form future plans for the regeneration of Saltash; plans which might increase the tourist trade and provide the ‘draw’ which Saltash needs to increase the number of visitors to the town as well as making the waterfront more attractive to passing boats.
Waterside boardwalk:
Creation of a waterside boardwalk connecting Jubilee Gardens pontoon to Saltmill Park
A raised pathway along the bio-diverse riverbank
Part of a connected series of routes promoting Active Travel
Illuminated Royal Albert Rail Bridge:
The Royal Albert Bridge is Saltash’s most recognisable landmark
Make more of this structure with a stunning lighting installation (not simply flood-lighting)
It would have the potential to become a significant tourist attraction - part of an ‘art trail’?
Perhaps the subject of an international competition?
See ‘The Illuminated River’ - a cohesive lighting vision for the Thames bridges celebrating bridges as architectural, social and historical landmarks. Beckett Rankine are on the team.
