We organised an engagement workshop for representatives of key stakeholder groups and organisations on 14 November 2023 .
Studio Hive presented the initial proposals and invited feedback and further ideas, as shown below. The event also included two walking tours taking in Jubilee Green, the space under the bridges, Saltash Pier and slipway, Saltash Waterside, site of the old Wheatsheaf Pub and the Saltash Sailing Club.
Key suggestions included:
Provide more facilities to attract/keep visitors at the Saltash Waterside, especially families, including:
Improved toilets including shower and accessible facilities – liaison with Network Rail
Accessible mobility aids to hire
Better play area for families plus picnic benches/tables
Possible quick win - improve paving and outside décor
Installing CCTV
Attract food outlets – whether pop up or more permanent eatery
Could combine with facility for water-sports/hire of paddle boards/canoes, sports equipment
Staging regular events/visitor attractions – music, food, light or laser show
Display local history information boards
Art project - using students/resources from Falmouth & Plymouth
Additional infrastructure for water users:
Facilities e.g. food/drink, showers/toilets etc mentioned above
Review mooring fees in comparison with Plymouth
Feasibility of new pontoon/moorings - could enable boats to be removed from the beach and support new ferry services
Improve linkages and connections by water:
Investigate regular ferry service between Saltash & Saltash Passage/ Royal William Yard
Potential for ferries/water taxis to/from destinations along the Tamar including:
Mount Edgcumbe Country Park
Saltash Passage
Barbican
Torpoint
Improve linkages by bus and walking/cycling:
New boardwalk – involves a number of land ownerships/access for private moorings
Beryl Bikes service launching in Saltash
Cycle routes to Bodmin and Plymbridge and local attractions
Land train or local bus service connecting town to Saltash Waterside
Way-finding links to local walking/cycling trails including Round Cornwall Trail and Tamara Trail
New opportunities on Saltash Waterside:
Potential redevelopment of the old Wheatsheaf site
New b&b /hostel accommodation for hikers
Use of spaces currently occupied by garages for possible café/toilet/shower (Network Rail)
Food & drink café/restaurant
Establishing new events
Reviewing parking provision and charging
Potential for major new attraction - lighting up Royal Albert Bridge
