On October 10th of 2022, Mahtomedi STEM Club held The Fab Lab Celebration! This event celebrated the 11 year anniversary of the Fab Lab and everything it has led to.
Engineering students demonstrated the various fabrication machines in the Fab Lab while various teams such as Rocket Team, Real World Design Team, Robotics Team, and Mapping a Protein Story (MAPS) Team all presented their accomplishments throughout the years since the Fab Lab's creation.
There were numerous hands-on activities and demonstrations that allowed attendees to experience STEM and be a part of the Fab Lab.
In January, Mahtomedi STEM Club held a STEM Expo. This was a big night for not only the STEM club, but for many other STEM related clubs as well.
Groups presenting included the Rocket Team, Drone Club, Real World Design Team, Robotics Team, Mapping a Protein Story (MAPS) Team, and Engineering Students. They showcased their work through presentations, poster board galleries, demonstrations, and more.
In addition, there were student-led tours of the MHS Fab Lab which included demonstrations of the various machines housed there.
Young children in attendance experienced STEM hands-on with fun activities.
On January 9th, Mahtomedi STEM Club held The Stem Fair. This was an opportunity for middle school students to particiapate in STEM.
Students grades 5-8 created and presented projects involving Science Technology, Engineering, and Math. They could be anything, from studying mushrooms to researching hydroelectric power. The projects wre quite impressive and demonstrated significatn knowledge of STEM
In the end, judges from STEM Fields evaluated the Projects and chose three winners.
In January 2022, the STEM club expanded its reach to middle school students with marshmallow catapults.
In February 2022, the middle schoolers and high schoolers both made boats out of plastic straws and tested how many coins the boats could hold before they sank.
In October 2019, our members made paper Jack-o-Lanterns. Then, we created simple circuits to light them up.
In December 2019, we constructed catapults out of popsicle sticks, rubber bands, milk caps, and hot glue. The real challenge was trying to aim the marshmallows to land in our target bucket.
In February 2020, students used plastic straws, paper, tape, glue, and staples to try to construct a mini airplane that would fly. We tested and tweaked our planes to make them fly farther.
On May 29th, STEM Club members at Mahtomedi High School organized video chats with 3 STEM Professionals. Available to club and community members, the professionals explained what they do in their different STEM fields and how they got there. Attendees had the opportunity to ask questions during the calls as well.
