Downtown Houston contains James Beard award-winning chefs (Xochi) as well as mom and pop Italian places that are decades old (Perbacco) and most everything in between. There are a number of "Food Halls" where you can go with a group and have your pick of restuarants and drinks places.
Below are a few local favorites, but you may find things we locals have yet to discover...
All walk times from Magnolia Hotel
Xochi (Show-Chee) -- Unless you know Oaxaca, Mexico you haven't had this. The real thing. Reservations here. Walk: 10 minutes (click here)
Bravery Chef Hall -- Go with a group and everyone gets to choose their chef station. Favorites: Blind Goat (chef Christine Ha won Masterchef Season 3, and without sight) and BOH--divine pizza, but there is much more. Walk: 6 minutes (click here). Nice outdoor patio.
Underground Food Hall -- Much funkier than Bravery, but with good down-home Pho (a local soup speciality) and Mexican Birria, along with other restaurant stalls and beers galore. Walk: 4 minutes (not a typo, it's around the corner--click here).
Who watches Top Chef anymore on Bravo? It may be time to speed-watch a couple of this season's episodes--it's all Houston this season.
