My grandmother is a 92 year old woman who enjoys cooking and baking. She is frequently seen in the kitchen creating her specialty dishes, or exploring new dessert recipes. During big holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, the kitchen in my grandmother's home of over 60 years is filled with wonderful aromas and different spices. Along with the warmth escaping from the oven and below the pots sitting on the burners, the feeling created is homey and pleasant. I come from a large family, so my grandmother is used to making large portions for dinner and she still uses her heavy cast iron skillets and hefty kitchen pots. She has not lost her touch in the kitchen, preparing our family delicious meals and always sending food home with us after a visit. A challenge she encounters in the kitchen when cooking is handling the heavy skillets and pots when transferring them from the stove top to the table. Having an assistive technology that allows my grandmother to lift the skillets and pots will help her keep her independence and provide her with comfort and ease while cooking.
The Pan Carrier is an assistive device that helps the client handle a heavy pan when cooking. A soft grip at the top gives the client comfort and the metal rod helps stabilize the pan, carrying it as if it were a basket.
