The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
These are some materials from my student assessment project, where I worked with a student who was a struggling reader. I interacted with this student to learn about their background, to determine their interest and attitude toward reading, as well as their reading strengths and challenges.
This connects to standard 6H) understands how to use a variety of formal and informal assessments to recognize and address the reading, writing, and oral communication needs of each student; because I used different methods to assess where the student was at with reading, such as an informal reading inventory, and a word list.
While completing this student assessment project I learned how to conduct an IRI, and a reading inventory. I also learned how to come up with strategies and goals the student for word recognition and comprehension. I also learned more about the student and their background.
This a lesson that I taught with my kindergarten classes on Kandinsky where we looked at his artwork, learned about his life, and then painted our own versions of his piece Color Study. Squares with Concentric Circles.
This lesson connects to standard 6Q) integrates reading, writing, and oral communication to engage students in content learning. It incorporates reading, as there is a connection to the book "The Noisy Paintbox," and also oral communication as the students answer discussion questions and share about their art pieces.
When teaching the project, I learned more about differentiation. With my PTP students (special education at my school), I made a lot of adjustments to best serve each student. For example, with some students, I only had them do only 2 circles, with other students I had a circle tracer to help them draw the circle, or I allowed them to use a different material if they didn't like the sensory nature of paint.
