In addition to my time spent at Trinity, I also had the chance to study abroad in the Netherlands during my junior year, January-May 2023. While abroad, I completed 25 hours of observation at a Dutch primary school, in addition to teaching 2 cultural lessons while there. Additionally, along with other Dutch university students, we traveled to Valencia, Spain, and visited a bilingual primary school. There, we co-taught lessons about common Spanish, English, and Dutch vocabulary. While abroad, I lived with a host family and had 3 host "siblings" ages 4-11, which meant learning to build relationships with them, despite the language barrier. Studying abroad gave me a chance to better examine my own culture and education, while giving me a better insight into how to teach cross-culturally. Below is student work from some of the art lessons that I created based on various artists and using a variety of art materials!
Students in 1st grade read Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat by Javaka Steptoe, and identified different symbols and types of lines in Basquiat's work. Then, they picked a dinosaur shape to trace, added a crown, and colored it in. Next they painted their backgrounds, and finally, they chose symbols to add into the background with oil pastels and construction paper crayons.
Students in 3rd grade had fun learning about Salvador Dali (especially his mustache) and Surrealism. They chose their own animal to create in the style of Dali's piece The Elephants. They also experimented with wax resist by using crayons to color the animals, and watercolor for the background.
Students in 4th grade explored Wayne Theibaud's art and learned how to draw 3 different types of cake in 3D. Then, they created their own cake with any toppings they wanted to add, and finished by using oil pastels to color it.
Students in 5th grade learned about Roy Lichtenstein and Pop art. They then created their own project by choosing an everyday object or word and drawing it in Pop art style. They added color by using markers to draw Ben-day dots, and painted the rest.
One of my highlights of the school year happened on my last day of my 9 week placement at Kolmar Elementary. Without me ever knowing, my cooperating teacher had each student and teacher color, decorate, or write a message on one inch by one inch white square. Then, she put them all together in a frame for me. I was truly blessed to be a part of such a wonderful school community, and I am endlessly grateful for everything I learned from the students and the teachers at D123.
