The IB Mathematics Internal Assessment can focus on any branch of math included in the course. The candidate must come up with a mathematical topic that personally interests them and then research background before coming up with data and performing detailed calculations. Of course, the candidate must then reflect on their math and conclusions at the end of their IB assessment paper.
For my IB Maths SL IA, I used my personal love of roller coasters to create intricate equations, tables, and graphs. I used a real roller coaster I myself have ridden at Six Flags Over Georgia and plotted specific points to use in my calculations, sketches, and formatted graphs I created on the computer in accordance to my topic of the relationship between such rides and polynomial functions.
I honestly loved this IA because of all of the new knowledge I gained on roller coasters and the processes that go into making them through mathematics and engineering. Due to my time spent on this paper, I now can shout cool facts about roller coasters and their different heights and types and specialties.
