Saint Louis University is proud to continue the established tradition of MACURH passive philanthropy by collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House Charity. Along with accepting donations of poptabs, the St. Louis Ronald McDonald House accepts donations of unused keys through their Keys to the Heart program. The donation proceeds will go toward providing a home-away-from-home at little or no cost for families of children who must travel far from home for medical treatment. Keys and pop tabs must be kept in separate containers and will be collected during check-in. Delegations will be awarded spirit points based on the amount of keys and tabs they bring, and the three delegations that contribute the most will be awarded additional spirit points.
Saint Louis University will also be holding a Penny War in order to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. Michael J. Fox, who starred as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future franchise, started the foundation with the goal of slowing or reversing the progression of Parkinson’s disease, as well as improving treatment for under-addressed symptoms and addressing side effects of current drugs. SLU asks that delegations bring only pennies, which will be collected at check-in. Delegations will be awarded spirit points based on the amount of pennies they bring, and the three delegations that contribute the most will be awarded additional spirit points.
In collaboration with SLU’s NRHH chapter, delegates will have the opportunity to make hand-tied fleece blankets to donate to Project Linus, an organization that distributes blankets to children in hospitals, shelters, or other situations in which they might be in need of comfort. Some fleece will be provided by us, but delegations that bring additional fleece will be awarded additional spirit points.
In terms of fleece dimensions, we ask that all fleece squares for blanket tying come in 2mx2m squares. Diagrams and tying instructions will be handed out and explained during philanthropy sessions.
Delegates will also have the opportunity to write letters of appreciation to veterans in the St. Louis area to express gratitude for the service of those individuals. The letters will be distributed to the Veteran Affairs St. Louis Health Care System, which consists of the John Cochran Division and the Jefferson Barracks Division. The VA will provide guidelines for the letters, and supplies to decorate the letters will be provided by us.
