This project helps give a baseline on what Social Media is and how it's being used by myself and others. On this page I will show statistics and quiz results surronding social media as a whole.
I will admit, I was fairly suprised at my results. I know I'm not as bad as some people, I can spend hours away from social media. I can even stay off my phone for hours at a time. But it's the downtime that can get you. The moments where I catch myself wanting to see what my family or friends post, but I end up scrolling far longer than I meant to. The hours long Youtube videos I watch, instead of interacting with the outside world. For a moment I was trying to get the highest scolling banana lengths on reddit. When I got the acheivement for '400 Day-Streak' I realizedI have a problem. Just because I don't spend all day, doesn't mean doing it daily is good, I'm currenlty at day 750, and I'll be honest I don't know how to stop. I may only spend less an hour everyday, I really shouldn't be checking an app every single day.
I wasn't surprised seeing Youtube being the top, but I didn't know Facebook was the second most used platform. I was always told Facebook is overrun by bots, how only your grandma uses it nowadays. Even over the years, Facebook shows no sign of slowing down. So maybe it's not dying as much as my frieds claim it is.
Social Media's Impact on Society
From the humble opinion of someone who's first phone was a flip phone, but at the same time was too young when Myspace was around. Over the years Social Media has created a 'divide' in our lifes that we don't know how to cross. We can put time limits on our phones, cars can have assitant features to help you stay off your phone. But it's only putting a bandaid on something that needs a cast. I catch people scrolling on social media more than games, books or even communcating with somebody. Doom scrolling is the popular term, and I feel like it should be changed to scroll addiction. Social Media went from being a place to catch up with long-distance family/friends etc., to how long can they keep you on their site instead of being in the moment.
Conclusion
After reading the article and learning about my addiction, though I understand it's small, but it's an addiction nonetheless. I learned that even though the group you surround yourself with may say one thing, statistics rarely lie. social media is on a rise and I think it will always be.
