This community led documentary was co produced by young women from Bishop Lavis, Uitsig, Clarkes Estate, and Wallacedene, in Cape Town, South Africa. They have acquired HIV through vertical transmission - from their mothers. They talk about their experiences of growing up with the chronic lifelong disease of HIV and what it is like to take lifelong medication from a very young age.
Many are orphaned and they share their joys, their tears, their challenges, and their dreams in this 40-minute documentary. How they negotiate economic challenges, violence in the community, and the stigma associated with HIV are shared. This is our story.
Production: Dr Hendricks, Rizqah Dollie and Reshaan Dollie
On 26 August 2022 we held a movie premiere of More than a Pill at the Tygerberg campus of Stellenbosch University. A first for our faculty and a very proud moment for us all. To see and hear a diverse audience of stakeholders conversating with one another about key health issues was a moving experience.
A full house of participants, their families, health care workers, politicians, and academics to see the first screening.
