My academic journey has been characterized by a commitment to transdisciplinary and innovative teaching methods, grounded in the belief in the crucial role of bridging the gap between science, the environment, and communities. My teaching philosophy is anchored in being a supportive, scholarly lecturer who employs innovative methods to foster impactful learning, teaching, assessment, and research. I have convened and taught a diverse array of courses across several institutions, including Stellenbosch University and KU Leuven, covering topics from Qualitative Evidence Synthesis to Global Health. My approach emphasizes active engagement, inclusivity, and the application of arts-based techniques, which have been well-received by students.
I bring over 17 years of teaching experience in higher education and have had the privilege of teaching and learning at various institutions around the world. This includes teaching Leadership in rural Swaziland, Research Methodology in Belgium, and engaging with both public and private institutions within South Africa, such as Pearson International (where I served as Head of Research and the Ethics Committee), the University of the Western Cape, and North-West University. Since joining the Department of Global Health in November 2015, I have undertaken sessional teaching in both academic spaces and clinical settings, including through the SUCCEED project in the Eastern Cape and Paarl from 2015 to 2018, focusing on research methods, participatory research, and evidence-based health care. A highlight of 2022 and 2023 was the use of Body Mapping as a reflective tool with first-year MBChB students – a reflection that was shared and well-received at the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) 2023 conference.
In addition, I continue to play a crucial role in curriculum renewal processes and have designed, led, and taught modules as outlined in my CV. Currently, I lead the monitoring and evaluation task team for the evaluation of the renewed curriculum in our faculty, under the guidance of the Vice-Dean for Learning, Teaching, and Assessment. I also serve as a committee member of the Department of Global Health’s Transformation Committee, the Postgraduate Committee in the Division of Health Systems and Public Health, and Research Sub-Committee C for the Faculty. Currently, I am a participant in the SUNRISE Future Professors Programme at Stellenbosch University.
