Digital Marvels: The Mathematical World of Computers
The latest installment of LUMS Math Circles, held on April 19th, 2024, curated an immersive journey into the enthralling domain of "Digital Marvels: The Mathematical World of Computers." Spearheaded by Ali Nauman Gillani, CEO of Skill2succes, and Mughees Ghayas, a PhD Scholar in Mathematics, the session proved to be an unforgettable experience for our diverse cohort of young learners from various schools and backgrounds.
The atmosphere was electric as participants engaged in a series of interactive and captivating activities, each designed to deepen their understanding of computer mathematics. From deciphering binary numbers to unraveling their translation into text and images, every moment presented an opportunity for discovery.
Guided by the pioneering works of visionaries like John Tukey, George Boole, and Claude Shannon, participants embarked on a journey through the evolution of computer science. Concepts such as bits, boolean algebra, and logic gates were elucidated, illuminating the foundational principles that underpin modern computing.
Hands-on activities allowed participants to construct basic circuits using logic gates, providing tangible insights into the inner workings of computers. Through these experiences, a profound appreciation for the intricate arithmetic, logic, and memory operations that power our digital landscape was fostered.
In essence, the LUMS Math Circle served as a platform for young minds to not only comprehend but also appreciate the complex mathematics behind computer technology. Congratulations to all participants for their enthusiasm and dedication to exploration. Stay tuned for more enlightening episodes in the future!
Special thanks to Ms. Noreen Sohail and Mr. Qamar Hussain for their continued organizational support. The session concluded with the certificate distribution ceremony.
