TPE 7 focuses on understanding how students learn to read and write, and on designing effective literacy instruction that supports all learners. This includes phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing development. Teachers must also understand how to differentiate for English Learners, students with disabilities, and advanced learners.
Literacy is foundational to student success in every subject. Strong, research-based reading instruction gives students the tools they need to understand content, express ideas, and think critically. This TPE reminds me that effective literacy teaching requires intentional planning, assessment, differentiation, and consistent practice.
Teaching this ELA lesson helped me strengthen my understanding of how to model skills clearly and support students through guided practice. I noticed that when I broke the task into steps and provided examples, students were more confident and engaged in the work. The use of sentence frames, visuals, and think-pair-share also helped my English learners and struggling readers participate more successfully.
As I reviewed student work, I saw that most students understood the objective, but some needed more support with organizing their ideas and identifying key details from the text. This showed me how important it is to check for understanding throughout the lesson so I can adjust instruction as needed.
Overall, this lesson helped me grow in differentiating for diverse learners and in using modeling to make expectations clear. I will continue to build in more formative checks and supportive scaffolds to help all students succeed in future ELA lessons.
Completing my Comprehensive Literacy Plan also helped me develop a deeper understanding of how to provide effective, structured literacy instruction for all learners. I learned how to use assessments like DIBELS and phonics screeners to identify student needs and plan targeted instruction. This assignment helped me see the importance of using explicit, systematic, and data-driven instruction, along with strategies like small group support and multisensory activities. As a future teacher, I will use this approach to support students’ foundational skills and ensure all learners have access to meaningful literacy instruction.
