The Louisville Writing Project was established in 1982. Under the care of Marjorie Kaiser, the LWP became a well-known, highly-regarded professional learning community. Affiliated with the National Writing Project, LWP was quickly recognized as an exemplary site in the Writing Project network. Teachers from the Louisville-metro area sought to participate in the coveted Summer Institute--a six-week professional development cohort designed to cultivate leadership and a love for writing.
Marjorie passed the torch to Jean Carol (Hicks) Wolph. Marjorie saw in Jean the traits that made her the perfect leader to carry the banner of the Louisville Writing Project. As Director, Jean used her position to speak life into the abilities of every teacher that she crossed paths with. Jean went on to lead LWP and the Kentucky Writing Project for decades. One of the highlights of her career was her work with the NWP's College, Career, and Community Writers' Program. Jean continues to serve as Director Emeritus, self-publishing professional texts and children's books, and furthering the work of the writing project in as many ways that she can.
