LYRICS:
Feeling like an ache – you’re without a home
And you carry it inside deep inside your bones
Just to tell you you’re alive – now get off your phone
Just to tell you you’re alive – now get off your phone
I don’t have it planned out – it could be like this
But you gotta place a bet – you gotta take a risk
If you keep on waiting for the night it wont exist
If you keep on waiting for the night it wont exist
Leaving your demons by the roadside
Come on lets burn it all to hell
Nothings coming in stepping two by two
And no ones walking miles inside your shoes
If you wanna see a change then its all on you
If you wanna see a change then its all on you
Leaving your demons by the roadside
Come on lets burn it all to hell
Leaving your demons by the roadside
Come on lets burn it all to hell
And when you’ve left them by the roadside
Well then you’ll know you’re doing well
Demons:
This was my attempt to write a Foo Fighters song. Well...that was the intention at the beginning, and it morphed and grew in different directions with every success and failure along the way. I still think that the rhythm section in the chorus manages to channel a bit of their style and energy, but the verses went in another direction. I tried to work out their lyrical patterns and structures by analysing a few tracks but I couldnt find a blueprint for Dave Grohl's lyrics - they're cryptic whilst having enough visual language and metaphors to stop it from being vague:
'Keep you in the dark/You know they all pretend/Keep you in the dark/And so it all began/Send in your skeletons//Sing as their bones go marching in again/They need you buried deep/The secrets that you keep are ever ready/Are you ready?
What is he saying here? Not sure - but the use of dark, skeletons, buried, bones, deep, secrets - they all build a sort of a world, even if we arent entirely sure what the message is - something is hidden in the earth, physically or metaphorically - and its brilliant! I tried to immitate this style and as you can propably here - it didnt work! Or rather - it didnt come out as a 100% identifiable copy, which actually wouldnt have been very good in the end because no one wants knock-off copies. If you want the real thing, just go and listen to the Foo Fighters! What I like about this song is that the seeds were sown, and then as always the results were very different - the inspiration didnt create a copy, it created something new.
