Lyrha and X'rhun save each others lives. Direct contrasts in many ways - they nonetheless find balance together. Both have a penchant for mischief that is all but unrivaled.Â
It was not an easy road to get there. Like any reasonable, well-adjusted people, X'rhun and I'lyrha immediately distanced themselves when feelings first began to manifest, pretending the feelings growing between them were transient fantasies.
Though idealistic and passionate, X'rhun had far too much experience being robbed of the people he cared about, fighting for the losing side, and keeping friends only in passing. Lyrha should have been another temporary adventure: a maiden rescued from the brink of death, a pupil taught Red Magic, and gone on her own way.Â
If she stayed, it meant letting her get to know the real him, beneath the Crimson coat. Having her by his side meant accepting the risk of losing a true comrade, again. After a lifetime of injustice, that might be too much a burden to bear.
For I'lyrha, it meant choosing between continuing to lie to the only honest man she'd ever met, and telling him the truth about what she really was - a pirate and a slaver, who'd spent her life caring for no one but herself, who'd condemned innocents, children, to horrible fates... everything X'rhun and Red Mages stood so stalwartly against. He'd killed many villains for lesser crimes. Honesty would give him the power to condemn her... or forgive her, both perhaps equally terrifying. And perhaps she didn't deserve his love, anyway, especially if she continued to keep her past a secret.
When the truth does come out, I'lyrha is surprised (and perhaps a bit angry) to learn that X'rhun had figured out what she used to be a while ago. But from his perspective, he'd wanted to give her a chance to genuinely change, without her past laying heavy on her shoulders. She chose the Red, and she kept her oath, and that was what mattered.Â
Though the two do not always travel together, and are not exclusive in regards to bedfellowship, they are often seen in cahoots.
Early on in her training, X'rhun calls I'lyrha "Lass", and she called him a variety of things like, "Bastard", "Asshole", "Cheater", "Old Man", "Coward", "Spoilsport", "Killjoy", "Dead Fish Face" and, when he outmaneuvered her in a fencing match particularly well, "Decrepit Bastard."
As she became moderately less feral, and he began to see her as more of a comrade than a pupil, they grew close enough to drop the preceding tribe letter of one another's names, becoming Rhun and Lyrha to one another.
He will later come to call her "Cielo" as a term of endearment.
Like X'rhun, Arya shows Lyrha that there are good people in the world, and that it's possible to change for the better.Â
Initially it was an awkward relationship - Arya latched onto Lyrha quickly, and Lyrha was uncomfortable with the idea of being thrown into a protector's role for a girl who had been captured by pirate-slavers. But as both train in Red Magic under X'rhun, they find a shared ambition and passion to unite them, and a family where none had previously been before.
She calls Arya "Little Sister," a familial nickname representing just how important the other Red Mage is to Lyrha.Â
A high-energy, playful rivalry which started years ago in a bar fight has continued well into Lyrha and Mahl's professional lives. The only thing the pair like better than fighting is, perhaps, sex.Â
As a result, the two's gremlinery often escalates to shenanigans of an intimate nature. And what was initially just a romping buddy developed into a strong familial bond.

Gifted to Lyrha by X'rhun himself, Trim is a griffin of Vochstein lineage as fast, fierce, and temperamental as his sire. Bites.Â
Lyrha is extremely attached to Trim, though you'd hardly know it by seeing the pair interact. They bicker constantly. He's her first real "pet", and though loyal to her, not particularly obedient.Â
Trim has far more respect for X'rhun, and is especially gentle toward Arya (who gives him treats).Â
