In 1987, the Lutheran Church of America (LCA) identified a need for a new congregation in the Lino Lakes and Centerville area, calling Pastor Wayne Kendrick as a mission developer. He connected with over 1,200 households, laying the groundwork for a new faith community.
The name Living Waters reflects both our faith and our setting—surrounded by a variety of water sources and nestled beside Reshanau Lake.
On January 8, 1988, 128 people gathered for the very first worship service at St. Genevieve’s Catholic Church, despite -35° wind chills and unplowed roads.
The congregation officially organized on October 15, 1989, initially purchasing land across from our current site. When it came time to build our own building, the land we purchased was deemed inaccessible so the land across the street was purchased- a parcel of land that included beautiful lakeshore and wetland features reminds us of our connection to creation. With help from Mission Builders and members’ own hands, the chapel and offices were built. In 1995, a fellowship hall was added to support our growing ministries, especially with children.
Pastor Kendrick took a new call in 1998, leading to the congregation’s first formal call process. In 1999, Pastor Tim Nelson joined, expanding worship and staff as the church continued to grow. Despite financial challenges in early years, the congregation persevered with faith and dedication.
In 2001, we began hosting seminary interns, nurturing future pastors while deepening our own theological understanding. In 2003, a larger sanctuary, offices, and sacristy were built, creating space for 288 worshippers. In 2004, a beautiful outdoor labyrinth was added to the church grounds. In more recent years we’ve created various paths through the marsh to the cattails of the lake to be used as part of a healing nature trail experience.
Pastor Nelson took a new call in 2006 leading us to call as the next settled pastor, Pastor Kathryn Tiede who served Living Waters until 2016. Pastor Kathryn’s passion for community building within and outside the walls of the church helped the church grow even greater. Pastor took a new call in 2016 leading us to call Pastor Betsy Hoium. Pastor Betsy moved the congregation to more intentional intergenerational worship styles. After Pastor Betsy left, Pastor Ivy Huston was called to serve in the beginning months of the Covid pandemic (2020), when everything that makes church, church, was needed to be explored from a distance.
Throughout the years, our community has served both locally and globally—hosting VBS, service projects, “Love Your Neighbor” events, and sending teams on Mission Jamaica trips and Christakon backpacking experiences. We’ve engaged in puppet ministry, community festivals, and faith formation for all ages.
At our core is the cross of Christ, empowering us to share the gifts of hospitality, generosity, and compassion. Rooted in God's grace, we continue to grow and serve—together.
