In the fall of 1999 Rosey Gerry invited folks to walk from Fort Western in Augusta to Ducktrap, following the old Augusta Road, one of the earliest links from our coast to the inland. The original road still existed in fragments, leading first from state route 105 out of Augusta into old roads, some barely visible, through the woods and finally emerging on Lincolnville's Whitney Road leading to Ducktrap and the sea.
At their first stop the group ate a potluck lunch at the Windsor Historical Society, then at the end of the day, camped out in a field halfway along, where a couple of Lincolnville selectmen brought dinner to the tired walkers. The next day found them eating lunch at the Searmont Historical Society. From there along Muzzy Ridge Road onto the nearly obliterated road down from High Street, across Slab City, and onto the Tanglewood trail that turns into Whitney Road. For the 27 tired, but exhilerated walkers it was a fitting introduction to the next couple of years preparing for Lincolnville's Bicentennial, our 200th birthday.
