By the end of 3rd Grade, students should be proficient using the rhythmic elements of sixteenth notes and the melodic elements of low la, low sol, and high do (as well as reviewing previously learned notation). They will be kept busy reading and writing these elements but will also practice them through ear training, creating (composition) and improvising through singing, listening, and playing barred instruments.
If it is safe to do so (because of best practices regarding Covid-19) 3rd grade students will learn various folk dances from around the world. This promotes many things musically (steady beat, musical phrases, singing, etc) but also promotes social interaction such as holding hands, working together, being kind and inclusive, etc. It is necessary for students to listen while moving and to constantly evaluate their interaction with others and their space.
Third graders will also continue learning ukulele, guitar, drum set, bass guitar, music technology, recording skills, etc. I follow a Modern Band approach and will try to teach students more about the music they are interested in and hear daily.
They also learn how to play recorders this year and for that reason will begin to learn the letters of the treble clef's lines and spaces. Recorders are provided and properly sanitized but often the students like to purchase their own. The best purchase for a recorder can be made at West Music for $2.50. Recorders purchased at Walmart or the Dollar Stores are often out of tune and are difficult to play successfully.
