My senior year was a whirlwind--between serving as the Student Body Vice President, finishing up my coursework, and completing my final Capstone for the Program on the Environment, I kept busy! Wrapping up my college experience has been emotional, and while I'm excited to graduate, I'll miss being at a Husky. The image of the left is me posing with my plaque in the Husky Union Hall of Fame, which I was awarded my junior year for my work as the ASUW Director of the Queer Student Commission.
In Spring of 2022, I was elected as the 2022-23 Student Body Vice President. It was such an honor to serve the student body as the Chief Internal Officer of the Associated Students of the University of Washington, a 1.7 million dollar organization with 75+ employees and dozens of volunteers. I made massive changes to the way our organization works so we can better serve students.
This year marked my second term as a Commissioner with the City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Commission. I've learned so much about effective advocacy through working with my fellow commissioners to advise the Mayor, City Council, and City departments on LGBTQ+ issues.
This year, I was appointed to serve as a member of the WA Health Care Authority's working group to redesign the behavioral health system for youth in our state. It's been such an amazing experience to collaborate with legislators, stakeholders, and community members in this important work.
During my third year as a Board member and the Student Organizing Chair for GLSEN Washington, I expanded our youth leadership and development programs. Leading our weekly youth group, the SHINE team, has been a highlight of my term so far!
During Winter quarter, I interned for the zero-waste consulting firm Perennial Zero Waste, as a part of my Environmental Studies major Capstone. For this internship, I performed on-site waste audits in Arizona (pictured above), analyzed waste data, and completed long-form research projects on waste analysis.
After a whole academic year of work, I finished by Environmental Studies Capstone in the Spring of my senior year. I completed my Capstone research project on waste management technology and the transition to a zero-waste economy. You can find my recorded presentation and my abstract here.
During my fourth year as a member, I was elected as the President of the Young Democrats of UW. It's been so exciting to help organize political advocacy on campus. The Young Democrats are purposefully designed as a "big tent" group where people from across the leftist political spectrum are all welcome. In this way, we can build a strong coalition.
It was such an honor to have been selected as a 2023-24 Fulbright Grantee. In September of 2023, I'll move to Madrid, Spain for a year to work with an environmental non-profit and teach English and global politics in public high schools.
In the Winter quarter of my senior year, I finished this very portfolio as the final part of my Honors coursework. It's been amazing to cap off my Honors career with this piece of relflection.
