A Community Lending Library
Opening Doors to Books and Opportunity for an Entire Community
This video shares the baseline findings from a community survey conducted in January 2026, before the opening of the Community Lending Library.
Through 160 household surveys, this study explores access to books and resources, the barriers communities face, and how a library is currently understood in a place where a lending library has never existed before.
The most frequently asked question of the data collectors was "how long will the library be here?" LIFT-Malawi is committed to funding the library operations until the community can stand on their own.
Manchewe Community Lending Library is built on a simple idea: books should be shared, taken home, and used.
This is not a reading room — it is a lending library designed to reach the entire community, extending access beyond school hours and beyond the classroom.
Books are borrowed and taken into homes
Children, youth, and adults all have access
Reading is supported through simple programs and community use
Technology will be introduced as capacity grows
This approach allows one small library to reach hundreds of people - strengthening access to books, knowledge, and opportunity across the entire area.
The upLIFT Education Program
upLIFT gives young people in remote mountain villages a chance to learn about more career possibilities, ask questions, meet people with different work experiences, and learn what steps they can take toward a future they choose.
Many young people in these communities want to build a good future, but may not know about the different careers, education and training opportunities available to them. They may know only the careers they see around them. upLIFT will offer career exploration, education and development.
LIFT’s work in Manchewe is shaped by the needs and realities of the community.
These projects are designed to work together — expanding access to books, resources, and opportunity while supporting long-term growth beyond the classroom.
LIFT will have achieved its mission when Manchewe, Malawi, no longer needs a LIFT because they have the knowledge and power to lift themselves!
