The Manchewe Community Lending Library officially opened on May 2, 2026, and is already becoming a valued community resource.
With more than 1,000 books, over 300 registered members, and hundreds of volunteer hours contributed by community members, the library is expanding access to books, technology, and opportunity for children, youth, and adults alike.

More than 300 community members have already joined the library.
Books are being borrowed, backpacks are in use, and volunteers are helping build a culture of reading and shared opportunity throughout Manchewe.
The demand is growing faster than the space.
The library has 10 laptops available for community use, but limited space and ongoing power challenges prevent them from being fully utilized.
This is only the beginning.
The library is the foundation for a larger vision: a permanent Community Education Hub that will expand access to books, technology, digital skills, and community programs for generations to come.
Meet Evon
Evon is the son of Library Helper Carol. Like many children in Manchewe, he now has access to books that were previously unavailable in his community.
OUR MISSION is to transform the future of a rural, northern Malawi village - one book, one lesson, and one community member at a time.
Education is the bridge to a better tomorrow. LIFT is committed to building that bridge through a community lending library, mentorship, and community-driven learning and development programs.
Our goal is simple: empower community members with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration they need to change their lives — and the world around them.
OUR VISION is to LIFT our partner community in Malawi by funding education and development programs that have the potential to be self-sustaining.
We have, and will continue, to work closely with local leaders to implement programs targeted to their needs and challenges.
LIFT is a hand-up, not a handout!
And, we ask the question - “What do the people of this Malawi community “really” need?" . . . Not what do “we” think they need!
Why Malawi?
Malawi is known as the Warm Heart of Africa for its kindness and community spirit — yet opportunity remains out of reach for many rural families.
In Malawi, access — not ability — is the greatest barrier to opportunity.
Over 70% of the population lives below the international poverty line
Rural schools are overcrowded and under-resourced
Books, technology, and skills training are scarce outside cities
Opportunity grows where access begins.
Why Manchewe?
Manchewe is a rural mountain community of nearly 6,000 people in northern Malawi— more than half are children and youth.
Despite its strong community and natural beauty, access to education remains limited.
Many students leave school due to costs
Classrooms are overcrowded
Families rely on subsistence farming with limited income
This is a community full of potential — where access can change everything.
Why a Lending Library?
There are no public libraries in Manchewe, and most books never leave the classroom.
A community lending library changes that.
Books go home, where learning begins
Children and families read together
Access to technology builds new skills
The library becomes a space for curiosity and growth
Access to books builds literacy, confidence, and opportunity — for all ages.
