Expanding Access & Opportunity to 13 Northern Malawi Mountain Villages
The Manchewe Community Lending Library welcomes everyone to enjoy free library programs and activities, read books in the library, access resources, and explore opportunities to learn.
Free membership gives members the added privilege of borrowing books and bookbags to take learning home. With 500+ active members, the library is building the foundation for a future Education & Technology Hub that will expand opportunities throughout these mountain villages.

In just 5 months, books are opening doors in Northern Malawi. At the Manchewe Community Lending Library, people of all ages are discovering books, bringing them home, and finding new opportunities to learn and grow.

Manchewe Community Lending Library is bringing books, technology, and learning opportunities to people of all ages. Books are circulating through the villages, and community members are discovering new opportunities to learn and grow.
Now the community is working toward a permanent Education & Technology Hub, owned and operated by this community of 15,500+ people from 13 mountain villages.
This is a place that will expand access to books, digital learning, educational programs, and community activities for generations to come.

OUR MISSION is to transform the future of a rural, northern Malawi village - one book, one lesson, and one community member at a time.
Education is the bridge to a better tomorrow. LIFT-Malawi is committed to building that bridge through a community lending library, mentorship, and community-driven learning and development programs.
Our goal is simple: empower community members with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration they need to change their lives and the world around them.
OUR VISION is to LIFT our partner community in Malawi by funding education and development programs that have the potential to be self-sustaining.
We have, and will continue, to work closely with local leaders to implement programs targeted to their needs and challenges.
LIFT is a hand-up, not a handout!
And, we ask the question - “What do the people of this Malawi community “really” need?" . . . Not what do “we” think they need!
Why Malawi?
Malawi is known as the Warm Heart of Africa for its kindness and community spirit, yet opportunity remains out of reach for many rural families.
In Malawi, access, not ability is the greatest barrier to opportunity.
Over 70% of the population lives below the international poverty line
Rural schools are overcrowded and under-resourced
Books, technology, and skills training are scarce outside cities
Opportunity grows where access begins.
Why Manchewe?
Manchewe is a rural mountain community of nearly 6,000 people in northern Malawi; more than half are children and youth.
Despite its strong community and natural beauty, access to education remains limited.
Many students leave school due to costs
Classrooms are overcrowded
Families rely on subsistence farming with limited income
This is a community full of potential — where access can change everything.
Why a Lending Library?
There are no public libraries in Manchewe, and most books never leave the classroom.
A community lending library changes that.
Books go home, where learning begins

The library becomes a space for curiosity and growth
