A Community Vision Taking Shape

What began as a single-room community lending library is already bringing books, technology skills, and new opportunities into homes throughout the community.

Hundreds of community members have joined the library, books are circulating through the villages, and a dedicated team of library helpers is supporting members every day.

As more people discover the library, the need for additional space, technology, and year-round community programming continues to grow.

Now the community is ready for the next step—a permanent Community Education Hub that will expand access to books, technology, digital skills, educational programs, and community services for generations to come.

A Library for All

Students from the ABEL Program in Livingstonia are regular library visitors -reading, learning, and enjoying the library together.

OUR MISSION is to transform the future of a rural, northern Malawi village - one book, one lesson, and one community member at a time.

Education is the bridge to a better tomorrow. LIFT is committed to building that bridge through a community lending library, mentorship, and community-driven learning and development programs.

Our goal is simple: empower community members with the tools, knowledge, and inspiration they need to change their lives — and the world around them.

OUR VISION is to LIFT our partner community in Malawi by funding education and development programs that have the potential to be self-sustaining.

We have, and will continue, to work closely with local leaders to implement programs targeted to their needs and challenges.

LIFT is a hand-up, not a handout!

Why Malawi?

Malawi is known as the Warm Heart of Africa for its kindness and community spirit — yet opportunity remains out of reach for many rural families.

In Malawi, access — not ability — is the greatest barrier to opportunity.

Over 70% of the population lives below the international poverty line
Rural schools are overcrowded and under-resourced
Books, technology, and skills training are scarce outside cities

Opportunity grows where access begins.

Why Manchewe?

Manchewe is a rural mountain community of nearly 6,000 people in northern Malawi— more than half are children and youth.

Despite its strong community and natural beauty, access to education remains limited.

Many students leave school due to costs
Classrooms are overcrowded
Families rely on subsistence farming with limited income

This is a community full of potential — where access can change everything.

Why a Lending Library?

There are no public libraries in Manchewe, and most books never leave the classroom.

A community lending library changes that.

The library becomes a space for curiosity and growth

Before the library opened, we listened

In early 2026, LIFT surveyed community members to understand access to books and technology, reading habits, and barriers to learning.

What we learned helped shape the Manchewe Community Lending Library and established a baseline for measuring change.

In September 2026, we plan to return to the community and ask again so we can measure what's changing, learn what's working, and understand what still needs attention.
