This music was written for a game developed in the August 2022 Major Jam over 7 days. The game was inspired by childhood imaginary adventures; two siblings exploring a serene lake and weaving tales of magic and monsters. While the game was never finished, the soundtrack was completed and fully produced, along with all SFX.
I've always wanted to write a boss battle theme - I thoroughly enjoyed composing a gripping piece of music that throws you back and forth through all the thrilling twists and turns of an intense boss battle. The relentless triplet rhythm, dramatic stabs, and unpredictable melody laden with jarring contours all work together to keep you on the edge of your seat, unsure of what will come next.
This track is designed to accompany your wanderings through the various lakeside areas, characterised by lush, pastoral harmonies, orchestral instrumentation and a peacefully meandering bassline.
Later, we shift to a more mystical and enchanting tonal colour, alluding to the unknown magic and mysterious secrets to be found as the player ventures deeper into their strange environment.
The game's shopkeeper is an acorn-loving squirrel who might seem pleasant at first, but soon reveals his greedy nature.
We start with a playful, bouncy recapitulation of the first four notes of the main gameplay theme, quickly switching to a shadier, sleazier groove in the relative minor with a descending chromatic bassline. To reflect his treehouse home and his acorn-only currency policy, we used percussion, marimba and shakers to create a "woody" sound.
