The task for our final electroacoustic composition project was to create a set of three thematically linked miniatures, drawing from the same pool of sound sources.
I decided to make a piece inspired by three gemstones: aquamarine, amber and amethyst, focusing on their molecular structure, geological properties, and overall character.
I recorded a bank of sounds from stone/metal/glass objects, and water. Treating these as my "neutral mineral" sounds, I attempted to infuse them with the life, colour and identity of the three different gemstones.
"Congratulations on your piece, it is one of the highest marks we ever gave".
- Professor Ricardo Climent (Composition Lecturer)
This miniature focuses on the physical building blocks of our earth, depicting different physicalities of stone and water, ever-changing states of matter and a constant whirlpool of molecular motion.
I used a cold, bright sonic language to reflect the light blue colour of the gemstone, and reflected its hexagonal crystal structure using motifs involving sixes such as different expansions of 3/2 cross-rhythms.
Amber fascinates me due to its connection to the natural world - being formed from tree sap, with an exceptional capacity for preservation, it bridges the gap between gemstones and the world of living organisms.
Exploring this idea, I treated the amber as a "portal" that we gradually rise out of, emerging in a prehistoric rainforest near a stream with a bustling jungle soundscape. By pitch-shifting and manipulating my "neutral mineral" sounds, I created a cacophony of biotic noises emulating the sounds of the ancient arthropods, amphibians, and avians that would've formed the ecosystem at the time.
Having already explored the physical materials of the earth and the life forms that inhabit it, I aimed to create a more magical, ethereal sound world inspired by the supposed mystical properties of amethyst.
Contrasting the others, this miniature is built around a structured melody with a more defined harmonic narrative, with kaleidoscopes of crystalline notes shimmering upwards through a series of seventh, ninth and eleventh chord extensions like light glinting off the faces of a cluster of crystals.
