"Resonate is an outstanding project and immersive audio experience using the latest Unreal Engine technology. It demonstrates flare imagination in its musical conception and deployment, creating a compositional landscape around the flute sound, which is as joyful to listen to, as to play it."

A screencast of the gameplay of Resonate
For my final university game audio project, our task was to use UE5's metasounds function to create a sonic-centric game experience around the theme: "virtual musical instrument".
I created an environment for the players to traverse with monolithic structures that react physically and musically to the player's note-projectiles, allowing them to be "played" like instruments.
All sounds in this project are derived from my own flute and glockenspiel recordings.
The in-game structures include:
Small pillars that rise momentarily when struck by a note-projectile, resonating with the pitch of the note they were struck by.
Rotating propellor-like platforms that produce low drone notes that overlap and harmonise.
Sideways-moving platforms with a reversible melody, the tempo of which is linked directly to the platform's velocity.
Ascending platforms which produce a pitch corresponding to the elevation of the platform above its starting point.
3 large golden pillars, each with a listening puzzle that unlocks a fragment of an important melody. As each pillar is activated, their section of the melody will echo across the world until all three are joined together.
As more of these structures are activated, the ambient airy flute sounds in the background become more frequent and lively, layering with the melodies emitted from the golden pillars and the sounds of the other activated structures to create an all-encompassing and growing sound environment. This solidifies the concept that the world, itself, is the virtual musical instrument.
"Musical materials and sound design are very organically integrated. This makes the planned mechanics and level directions become the score of a musical composition written for the global musical instrument. This is a very hard and mature concept to fully achieve in this course. Congratulations."
