"The Singularity is the point when artificial intelligence advances so quickly, it surpasses human intelligence."
This piece was co-composed by me and Mia Sugunasingha for the Spring Tune Jam 2024. Following the Tune Jam's theme, "Let the Singularity Begin", this track is a musical representation of an artificial intelligence and the thoughts dancing around its mind as it evolves, adapts and ascends beyond its boundaries. The idea of "machine learning" is central throughout the piece; we wanted it to feel almost like the music is constantly rewriting itself to advance and grow.
Metric, technological ostinato figures are juxtaposed with cerebral flashes of colour, like electrical impulses between neurons in a human brain. These ostinati gradually become more complex, expand their note sets, layer with retrograde versions of themselves and steadily work their way higher and higher in pitch until an "epiphany" is reached.
The music then expands harmonically and texturally, leading to a frenzied final section which accelerates exponentially and jumps sporadically through an ascending chromatic bassline. This introduces a flurry of new harmonic colour, rapidly escalating towards a climax that is abruptly cut short; this moment is the "Singularity"; the event horizon beyond which humanity cannot see.
We created this track in the last week of the jam and thoroughly enjoyed working together!
