Here's Link to my old web site on virtual geology. If you're viewing this on a smart phone, you may not be able to see and navigate very easily. I'm in the process of migrating the site to a more generally viewable form.
Topics I cover in Virtual Geology: Geodata Tables and Google Fusion tables, filters, summaries, and maps. It's virtual, as in, a digital form of the real world, but it's not 3D Virtual Reality.
Here's a link to a 2012 summary of augmented and virtual learning tools by Dunleavy and Deade. Already dated (technology is changing rapidly), but a great place for educators to start, if they have an interest in generating virtual learning environments.
