Leonardo's studies allowed the Florentine genius and above all future generations to understand in detail the principles of the functioning of the human body.
In particular, here we consider the accurate description of the muscles and limbs that enable the movement of the human body.

The observation of the movement of the animals and the man was the starting point of Leonardo's work as a scientist.
What follows is a sports skill (shot put) seen under the light of a simplified biomechanic analysis which involves the movement of the main muscle groups and offers a description of their functions.
The athlete is standing.
He puts the shot into his neck with the right arm bent at the elbow.
The left arm is extended and out from the body.
The weight of the body is on the right leg.
On loading on the right leg the trunk bends forward.
The athlete is his maximum curl: the right lower limb is quite flexed carrying the weight of the body completely.
The left lower limb starts to stretch towards the toeboard.
The left lower limb extends violently towards the toeboard, while the right lower limb pushes hard until it makes a short jump and reaches the middle of the platform.
The trunk must lean forward all the time.
The left foot touches the shot put toeboard; the right foot is almost in the middle of the platform.
The left upper limb starts to open outwards performing a wide rotation.
The foot and the right lower limb rotate forward bringing the hips and the trunk in a front position.
The foot and the right lower limb rotate forward thanks to the concentric contraction of the group of adductors (adductors longus, brevis and gracilis) and of the sartorius (lengthening of the tensor fasciae latae).
The right upper limb stretches quickly while the left upper limb, closing on the side, has a pre-stretch of the thoracic muscles.
Contraction of triceps, extension of biceps (extension of the forearm on the arm), contraction of pectoralis major, extension of the back muscles to push the shoulder forward.
The right lower limb completes the thrust, while the left lower limb pivots, remaining stretched.
Leg extension on the right thigh: quadriceps in concentric contraction, extension of the biceps femoris.
The triceps surae contracts to lift the heel off the ground by stretching the foot on the leg (extension of the tibialis anterior)
The right upper limb is completely stretched and releases the shot with a further thrust of the twist and the fingers (lash). This action is called whiplash.
Flexion of the hand on the arm enabled by the brachioradialis and the flexors of the carpus in concentric contraction, while the extender muscles relax and extend.
