Each year the students are asked of their interest in entering the Legion Oratory. They will present their orations before a committee from the local Henry G. Fix Post 23 and will follow the rules set forth for the Oratory Contest. This will familiarize them with the rules that will be followed at the District Contest. Other Post members and other interested people can watch the presentations if they wish. A stipend will be awarded for their participation, and the winner will compete at the District Level.
The Oratory Contest requires much study, preparation and practice, but the rewards can be great as the student advances through the different levels. Check out the sites below:

The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Contest sponsored by the Henry G. Fix Post #23 was held at the Garretson School Friday, January 6, 2023. Rebekah Roth, a Garretson Senior, participated in the contest and earned a chance to compete in the District 7 competition January 15th at Humboldt, SD. Her 8-10 minute prepared oration was a presentation about Womens Rights and the responsibilities of voting. She later discussed the 10th Amendment in a 3-5 minute impromptu speech. Rebekah received a $500 Jerome Johnson Oratorical Scholarship from the Henry G. Fix Post #23 Legion.
Jayden Clark represented District 7 at the American Legion State Oratorical Competition Sunday February 23rd at Oacoma, SD. Although she won't be continuing on to the National competition in Indianapolis, IN, we are SO proud of how she represented us! Her 8-10-minute prepared oration was a presentation about the U.S. Constitution and the responsibilities of citizenship. She later discussed the 20th Amendment in a 3-5 minute impromptu speech.
The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Contest sponsored by District 7 was held at the Community Center in Humboldt, SD. Jayden Clark, a Garretson Senior, participated in the contest and earned a chance to compete with the winner of 7 other District Champions from throughout South Dakota in the State Legion Oratorical Competition on February 23, 2020 at the Mid-Winter Conference in Oacoma, SD. Her 8-10-minute prepared oration was a presentation about the U.S. Constitution and the responsibilities of citizenship. She later discussed the 27th Amendment in a 3-5 minute impromptu speech. Jayden received $100 from District 7 for her win!

Jayden Clark, a Garretson Senior, participated in the contest and earned a chance to compete in the District 7 competition January 12th at Humboldt, SD. Her 8-10 minute prepared oration was a presentation about the U.S. Constitution and the responsibilities of citizenship. She later discussed the 27th Amendment in a 3-5 minute impromptu speech. Emily Malsom, a Garretson Senior, participated in the contest and earned a chance to compete in the District competition. Her 8-10-minute prepared oration was a presentation about the U.S. Constitution and the responsibilities of citizenship. She later discussed the Fifteenth Amendment in a three minute impromptu speech.
Nobel Nothstine, a Garretson High School Freshman, did an outstanding job competing in the 2017 American Legion High School Oratorical District Seven Contest. After winning the local competition hosted by the Henry G. Fix Post #23, she moved on to District competition. There she finished second to last year’s state champion who went on to compete in the national competition. Her 10-minute prepared oration was a presentation about the U.S. Constitution and the responsibilities of citizenship. She later discussed the Seventh Amendment in a three minute impromptu speech. The American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Contest sponsored by the Henry G. Fix Post #23 was held at the Garretson School Friday, January 13, 2017. Nobel Nothstine, a Freshman, won the contest held at the Garretson School and earned a chance to compete in the District competition which will be held in Humboldt. Students from Lake, Lincoln, McCook, Minnehaha, Moody, and Union Counties will compete at the District level. The winner at the District will advance to the state competition. Nobel was presented with a $50 check from the Post. Emily Malsom, a Garretson Junior, finished second and also received a cash reward from the Post.
Katie Giesler represented the Henry G. Fix Post #23 at the District 7 Competition. She placed second and received monetary prizes at both the local and district level. Congratulations Katie!
